Amble to Hexham. The end of the official East Coast Route 1 and half way along Route 72 following Hadrian’s Wall.
The early morning route out of Amble and round Druridge bay was magnificent with blue water and golden sandy empty beaches. I know this isn’t a castle but it is a lovely sight.
From there we cut inland round Ashington and Blyth and back to the beaches of Tynemouth and Whitley Bay and bagged our first castle of the day. This is Tynemouth castle and priory.
We then had a less than pleasant run into the centre of Newcastle next to the Coast Road to get our second and final castle of the day. They are not as frequent anymore but we have a few more up our sleeve.
This is …yep you guessed it - Newcastle. Although it isn’t so new anymore!
This marked the end of the official coast and Castles Sustrans route between Edinburgh and Newcastle but we have another couple of days to explore. We will leave the coast behind and tour more of the beautiful North East and see a few more castles on the way. I didn’t realise that I was a castle geek but it is obviously so!
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it.
